Windy Springs Farm Training
At Windy Springs Farm (WSF) we train both the horse and rider. You do not have to have your own horse to take lessons at our facility; we have school master horses available that you can take your lessons on. This is addressed in more detail for the rider under the “lessons” section. Now we will look at training the horse.
At WSF, we start with basic ground manners before moving on to breaking and training undersaddle. We handle our horses a minimum of twice daily at regular feeding times and then more often while in training. Having a farrier as part of the family and training team is a bonus when it comes to foot care and developing manners.
As we achieve a level of basic ground manners, and while training each individual animal, we also assess the animals’ temperament, attitude, talents and ability. After this assessment is complete, we can then determine the best course of action in their training program. We look at the horse as an individual and at what is best for him overall. The shoeing, nutrition and general well being are all taken into consideration when planning each horse’s program.
Every horse does not have to be a show horse, nor are they necessarily naturally talented enough to do the job you may have had in mind for them. All horses are different and have different strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, after we have worked together with you and your horse to set your goals, we start working on the strengths that will help get you there. Training the horse is a skill that requires a great deal of patience and good judgment. The strengths of the horse are emphasized and developed, while the weak areas are improved to maximum potential. In many aspects of the horse’s training, the owner can observe and even participate giving the team a better foundation for their future together.
After the basic green breaking is complete, you may decide that you would like your horse ready for the show ring. We can offer additional training in several areas to help this goal become a reality. We can also provide the necessary exercise your horse needs to be properly prepared and fit for this undertaking.
Whether it is re-schooling for a particular bad habit or teaching your horse new skills, we can help you get where you want to go.
