Activities at Windy Springs Farm
Windy Springs Farm is a busy place for the horses and riders. From children to adults, there is always something to do. Some activities are offered on grounds and others away from home at competitions or events.
The Augusta County 4-H Light Horse and Pony Club often holds its meetings at WSF as a large part of the membership in this local club ride regularly here. Since WSF has a variety of expertise to draw from, the club can sponsor many educational activities using the staff here and its horses. Education, safety and fun are priorities for this club. 4-H is offered to ages 9-19 through the County Extension office. There are other clubs within the county, but the ACLH&PC is predominately organized out of WSF and by its staff.
Many members of the Glenmore Hunt Pony Club also ride at WSF and some board their horses there also. Pony Club is an organization devoted to the education of the horse and rider team. It offers education with an opportunity to meet levels and obtain “ratings” as well as participate in many team competitions such as games, dressage, show jumping, eventing, polocross and others. PC strives to teach the individual quality horse care and riding skills while fostering sportsmanship. It is offered for ages 5-25.
Riders at WSF may show on the local South West Virginia Hunter Jumper Association circuit and some other shows. When the staff of WSF are going to a show, either as a participant or coach, riders may be offered the opportunity to take their horse of one of the farm’s animals to show in hunter, jumper or equitation classes. Any age rider may participate as classes are offered at the particular show in their riding level.
Hunting with the Glenmore Hunt Club may be offered throughout the fall, winter and early spring seasons. Being a weekend activity for us, and weather permitting, it is on an “as can” basis.
Young Rider Camp is often offered in the summer months for those folks not in school. This is usually offered in the “day camp” format with riding lessons daily and basic horse management skills as well as fun horse sports. It is offered on an “interest” basis.
There are other opportunities for clinics, lessons (see Lessons section) and horse sports, etc. if requested. So, as you can see, there is a lot of education, competition, and fun at WSF.
